EMDR Kit Evolution: Hardware & Compatibility Guide
At EMDR Kit, we are continually improving and updating both our hardware and software to ensure therapists have access to the most reliable and clinically advanced tools.
The details below reflect the major milestones and easily identifiable changes in our product history. Please note that while we no longer sell older versions, we actively strive to maintain as much cross-compatibility as possible through our software and support networks.
1. EMDR Kit Wireless (Major Redesign: 2023)
In 2023, the Wireless system transitioned from a "contact-based" charging system to an "inductive" wireless charging system to improve durability and ease of use.
Wireless Pulsators
Current Version (Late 2023 – Present):
Identification: Smooth base with no metal showing. Features a top-mounted light strip.
Charging: Inductive (Wireless). Charges only in the separate New Docking Station.
Incompatibility: Will not fit or charge in the integrated slots of the older Light Tube base or the legacy Docking Station.
Legacy Version (Pre-2023):
Identification: Two gold metal contact pins visible on the bottom. No light strip; single LED indicator dot on the front.
Charging: Metal-to-metal contact. Charges in the legacy Light Tube base or the older-style separate Docking Station.
Incompatibility: Cannot be charged via induction in the new Docking Station.
Wireless Light Tube
Current Version (Early 2023 – Present):
Identification: Shipped with a professional adjustable tripod. Built with premium aluminum and features a sleek base with no integrated charging slots for Pulsators.
Version Numbers: Located on the sticker on the bottom side of the Light Tube. Valid current versions are:
2.1.1,5.1.1,7.1.1,8.1.1, and11.2.1.
Legacy Version (Pre-2023):
Identification: Fixed plastic base. Includes two physical "holes" (integrated charging slots) built into the base to hold and charge the legacy Pulsators.
Version Numbers: Located on the sticker on the bottom plate. Legacy versions include:
1.0,2.0,3.0,4.1,4.2, and4.3.
App Compatibility Note: The EMDR Kit App is fully backwards compatible. It can control all generations of our Wireless hardware seamlessly.
2. EMDR Kit Classic (Major Redesign: 2016)
The Classic (wired) kit underwent a significant port, cable, and controller transition to maximize longevity and structural durability.
Current Version (Post-2016)
Visual Design: Dark grey Controller and matching dark grey Light Tube. Features an improved tripod connection and enhanced tactile button feel.
Hardware Ports: Uses a modern USB connector for the Light Tube cable and a DC Barrel Connector (round plug) for the charger.
Firmware Identification: When powered on, the digital display will briefly show the firmware version. Current versions always start with a 3 (e.g.,
3.09).
Legacy Version (Pre-2016)
Visual Design: Light grey Controller paired with a light grey or naked aluminum Light Tube.
Hardware Ports: Uses a large, circular 5-pin DIN connector for the Light Tube cable and a Micro-USB port for the charger.
Firmware Identification: When powered on, the digital display will briefly show a firmware version starting with a 1.
Classic Component Compatibility Note: Pulsators and Headphones for the Classic kit use the exact same 3.5mm and 6.3mm audio jacks across both generations. If a legacy controller breaks, the clinician's existing legacy Pulsators and Headphones will work perfectly if they upgrade to a current Controller + Light Tube set.
3. Headphones & Personal Device Compatibility
While legacy headphone models are no longer manufactured, we maintain cross-compatibility to protect long-time users.
Current Version: Features round ear pads. This headphone design is shared between both systems: the Wireless Kit connects to your device via Bluetooth, while the Classic Kit connects directly to the controller using the included audio cable.
Legacy Version: Identified by square ear pads (wireless) or larger HAMA branded shells (classic). These are no longer produced, but they remain fully operational with current EMDR Kit hardware.
Can I use my own headphones with the EMDR Kit?
Yes, absolutely. You are never locked into using our specific headphones:
For the Wireless Kit (App-based): The EMDR Kit app uses the native audio engine of your smartphone or tablet. If your own Bluetooth headset or wired earbuds work with your phone/tablet, they will work perfectly for auditory bilateral stimulation within the app.
For the Classic Kit: The Classic Controller features a standard 3.5mm headphone jack. Any standard third-party wired headphones can be plugged directly into the unit.
4. App Updates & Long-Term Hardware Longevity
Active Maintenance: We actively maintain and update the EMDR Kit app to ensure continuous compatibility with the latest iOS and Android operating systems, protecting your investment for the long haul.
Our Track Record: We have been in business for almost 15 years. Our commitment to backward compatibility is proven in practice: therapists who purchased our very first wireless model can still use it with the current app today.
Tech Evolution Reality: While technology naturally moves forward and legacy hardware might not always support advanced new software features developed years down the line, your equipment's core clinical functionality remains supported. We do not abandon our equipment.
The App-Free Alternative: For clinicians who prefer a setup completely insulated from smartphone operating systems or future app updates, we recommend the EMDR Kit Classic. It uses a robust physical remote control and requires no software or app maintenance whatsoever.
5. Third party compatibility:
- Closed Ecosystem: EMDR Kit hardware (including the Wireless Pulsators and Light Tube) is specifically engineered to operate exclusively within our own ecosystem.
- Official Software Only: The hardware only works with official EMDR Kit related software (the EMDR Kit App for the Wireless system, or the physical Controller for the Classic system).
Third-Party Platforms: Our hardware cannot be connected to, synchronized with, or controlled by third-party apps / competitors, websites, or online therapy platforms such as BilateralBase, remotEMDR, or any other external software.
6. Summary of Service & Compatibility Policies
Sales Policy: We do not sell or stock legacy hardware components. All new orders automatically receive the latest production specifications.
Wireless App Policy: The EMDR Kit app supports all Wireless generations (Legacy & Current), though older hardware may occasionally be restricted from using advanced, newly introduced app features.
Replacement Policy: If a Legacy Pulsator breaks, it cannot be replaced with a single New Pulsator because it will not charge in the old contact-style base. In this scenario, it is best to upgrade to the New Pulsators + Docking Station or transition to a complete modern set.
