What is "Chaos Mode" and when should I use it?

Chaos Mode is an advanced feature in the EMDR Kit app designed for maximum Working Memory Taxation (WMT). It uses unpredictable light patterns to challenge the brain during the desensitization phase of therapy. By introducing a "chaotic" stimulus, you prevent the client from habituating to a predictable rhythm, which is a core principle of modern EMDR 2.0 protocols.

How Chaos Mode Works

In a standard session, the light moves horizontally at a constant, rhythmic speed. In Chaos Mode, the LightTube introduces randomized variations such as unpredictable jumps, change of direction, saccadic jumps and flashes.

When to Use Chaos Mode

Chaos Mode is specifically designed for situations where a higher level of cognitive load is required to process a memory:

  • High-Distress Targets: When a client is stuck with a high SUDs (Subjective Units of Distress) score and standard horizontal movement is not providing enough distraction.

  • EMDR 2.0 Protocols: For clinicians practicing EMDR 2.0, where the goal is to tax the working memory as much as possible.

  • Preventing Habituation: If a client has become too comfortable with the rhythmic movement, their brain may "auto-pilot" the tracking. Chaos Mode forces active engagement.

How to Activate Chaos Mode

You can easily toggle this feature on or off during a live session:

  1. Access the Menu: Open the Light Tube sub-menu within the EMDR Kit app.

  2. Toggle the Mode: You will see the Light Tube is typically set to Sweep. Simply tap on Chaos to activate the unpredictable pattern.

  3. Adjust Intensity: You can combine Chaos Mode with high-speed settings and random color to create the most challenging environment for the working memory.

Important Clinical Note

Because Chaos Mode is highly taxing, it should be used strategically. If a client becomes overwhelmed or loses the ability to follow the light entirely, consider switching back to a standard rhythmic flow or reducing the overall speed. Always monitor the client's ability to maintain a "dual awareness" state while using this high-intensity feature.
