While visual stimulation is the most common form of bilateral stimulation in EMDR, Tactile Pulsators (also known as tappers or buzzers) are an essential tool for many clinicians. They provide a physical, grounding presence that can be used on its own or in combination with the Light Tube to provide bilateral stimulation and increase the taxation on working memory. Furthermore, many therapists use the Pulsators specifically as a grounding tool to help clients stay connected to their bodies or to facilitate nervous system regulation.
Why use Pulsators?
Tactile stimulation interfaces directly with the somatosensory system, providing a unique sensory route that can be more accessible or effective for certain clients than visual tracking.
For the Therapist: Process Optimization
Physical Relief: Let’s be honest: manually tapping a client’s hands or knees, or waving your own arm for hours is a workout your joints didn't sign up for. Pulsators take over the repetitive labor, preventing "EMDR-shoulder" and allowing you to finish your workday without physical strain.
Cognitive Bandwidth: By offloading the "work" of maintaining the rhythm to the equipment, you regain your full focus. You become a "pure observer" of micro-expressions and shifts in breathing, rather than acting as a human metronome.
The "Safety Bubble" (Professional Distance): While techniques like the "butterfly hug" allow for self-tapping, pulsators allow you to provide consistent, external stimulation while maintaining a respectful physical distance. This preserves the client's personal space: a critical factor for trauma survivors who may find physical touch or close proximity from a clinician triggering.
For the Client: Grounding & Focus
The Physical Anchor: For clients prone to dissociation (feeling "spaced out" or disconnected), the physical vibration acts as a powerful anchor to the "here and now." The rhythmic pulsing provides a tangible reminder of the safe therapeutic environment.
The "Eyes Closed" Advantage: Unlike the Light Tube, pulsators allow the client to close their eyes. This removes external visual distractions and the pressure of being observed, letting the client turn their focus entirely inward.
Alternative to Visual Tracking: For clients with light sensitivity, migraines, vertigo, or eye-tracking difficulties, pulsators provide a highly effective bilateral alternative that requires zero visual effort.
Best Practices: How to use the Pulsators
The way a client interacts with the pulsators can change the "feel" of the session. It is always best to let the client choose what feels most secure.
The Palm Grip: The client holds one pulsator in the palm of each hand. This is the most common method and provides the most direct, grounding tactile feedback.
Thighs/Knees Placement: Pulsators can be placed under their thighs/knees while they sit. This is often preferred by clients who find holding objects distracting or who want a more subtle, background sensation.
Creative Placement: For clients who might find holding something distracting, the pulsators can be tucked into pockets or even placed inside socks. This allows the child to feel the "taps" while keeping their hands free, making the process feel less clinical and more comfortable.
Finding the Right Intensity: Always start at a low intensity and ask: "Does this feel like a comfortable, rhythmic tap, or is it too intense?" The goal is to keep the client within their Window of Tolerance—noticeable enough to ground them, but not so strong that it becomes a distraction.
Advanced Wireless Features
The EMDR Kit Wireless pulsators include specialized features to enhance the tactile experience:
Visual-Tactile Sync (Color on Pulsators): You can enable integrated LED lights on the pulsators via the app. The lights will blink in the same rhythmic pattern as the vibrations. This "multi-sensory" experience (seeing and feeling the rhythm) is an excellent way to increase Working Memory Taxation for clients who need more sensory input to stay present and can be used without having the Light Tube.
Saved Profiles: Once you find the exact vibration intensity that helps a client feel regulated and grounded, you can save it to their profile. This ensures a consistent, predictable start to every session.
